Artificial Light

I used to photograph in natural settings most of the time. Natural light was a given, with some exceptions when I wanted to experiment, especially when shooting in very low light.

Then I started photographing in urban settings more and more. I love walking around early in the morning or late at night. I like the backstreets that feel as if they are still part of an old, forgotten city frozen in time. I like the energy of city life – not the crowds but the small gestures and happenings at the margins. I like to see the city calming down and, in a way, coming back to itself after all the agitation and shouting are gone. I like to observe people going about their lives.

  1. I love the Belgian countryside, Florin.
    It could be winter frozen in time, or nature’s bare-bones.

    I find the Lisbon image unsettling, as it shoes that there’s no safety, not even during a mundane task of washing dishes.

    But from an artistic point of view, they show great artistry, each one capturing a different facet of artificial light during nighttime. 🙂

      The Lisbon photo is from Alfama, one of the oldest parts of the city. Locals stay out until late, windows and even doors remain open, and there is a feeling of closeness as you would maybe have in a village. Frankly, I did not feel as if I’m trespassing a limit of intimacy, and I’m usually quite sensitive about this. For me, the photo is about the idea of home, about feeling at home, because there was so much peace in that quiet scene. Not my home, but what home feels like for people in general.
